  4.     DIED. Karl Menninger, 96, psychiatrist who brought mental
  5. therapy into the medical mainstream and transformed the
  6. nation's way of thinking about the mentally ill and criminally
  7. disposed; of cancer; in Topeka. An innovative maverick with a
  8. streak of curmudgeonliness, Menninger sometimes said he was
  9. "more Freudian than Freud," meaning that he took his lessons
  10. from direct observation of each unique mind. Menninger founded
  11. the Menninger Clinic in Topeka with his father and brother in
  12. the 1920s and spent the next five decades developing it into one
  13. of the world's most celebrated hospitals for the mentally ill.
